The goal of this exhibition is to present the power and promise of Big Data while communicating EPFL’s creative and dynamic role in this new space. EPFL takes a strong and confident position: though the challenges of are immense, the goal is worthwhile and above all achievable. “This is possible.”
The exhibition presents two of EPFL’s flagship projects on Big Data: The Venice Time Machine and the Blue Brain Project. Together these embody Big Data’s deep contributions to science, the humanities and to society. At first glance, the Blue Brain Project and Venice Time Machine have little in common in terms of subject matter, data collection methods and discoveries. A deeper look reveals important commonalities. What unifies these projects is the language of data and the power of simulation: the notion that by building richly detailed models of reality we can unlock answers to previously impossible questions. By presenting two very different projects in a shared visual language and experience framework, we communicate the core steps that enable Big Data to break new ground: Measure > Understand > Simulate > Discover
