Welcome back to Earth! As visitors step out of the theater, after they experienced a bit of the overview effect, they are hugged by Earth once again. An immersive multi-sensorial collection of Earth’s materials offers the visitors insights into the variety and abundance of matter and life on this planet. An experience somewhat in contrast to the remoteness and sterility of a journey to outer space. Is there enough ‘planet’ for everyone? A central dynamic sculpture reminds the visitors, in a moment of honest confrontation, that this entire beauty of materiality is not infinite. As visitors interact with the sculpture they are introduced to the concept of the Overshoot Day and the amount of “planets” we actually need to feed our life styles.
Situated on the surrounding walls, this curated collection is a library of natural wonders, textures, sounds, formations and even smell. This library focuses on raw materials and resources, with a potential distinction between regenerative and non-regenerative materials. The relative scale of a material in the exhibition corresponds to its relative abundance on the planet.
What can we do as a society for the planet? The second space in the journey focuses on societal and economic aspects. Overwhelmed by the Overview Effect and the sensorial library, visitors are invited to explore different ways we can make a difference and help Earth and our society to thrive. Circular Thinking Visitors learn about circular economies through a performative journey following raw materials through production. They are encouraged to rethink how waste can become new resources and active design can change our ingrained processes.
